According to foreign media reports, 7-Eleven announced in the United States recently that it will install a self-service cash register device called "Scan & Pay" in 14 stores in Dallas. Customers can use the mobile device to scan the product barcode and then choose to complete the payment via mobile phone, credit card, Apple Pay or GooglePay, without the need for clerk intervention.
However, before using the self-service cash register system in the above stores, consumers need to install the 7-Eleven app. After the payment is completed, the app will provide a QR code, and the consumer will need to scan the QR code to confirm the payment before leaving the store. The app automatically launches payment authentication related functions when the user enters the store. Because of the purchase of alcoholic beverages (requires verification of identity information) and the need for assistance with cooked food, these stores are not completely staffless.
7-Eleven plans to extend the service beyond Dallas in 2019 after testing in the previous 14 stores basing on rfid cashless technology
But this is not the first time that 7-Eleven has been involved in the unmanned retail sector. In January of this year, Taiwan’s 7-Eleven’s first unmanned convenience store “X-Store” was unveiled at its Taipei headquarters. In this space of about 60 square meters, in addition to the most basic configuration of unidentified stores such as face recognition, RFID tags, self-service cash registers, etc., a refrigerator induction door that automatically opens whenever someone approaches is added; The scanning microwave oven in the district realizes that the microwave time can be automatically recognized by placing the barcode on the microwave sensor, and the customer does not need to operate the time button; the robot appearing in the store will actively say "welcome" to the guest.
In the United States, Amazon opened its first unmanned retail store, Amazon Go, downstairs in its Seattle headquarters in January. Similarly, there are still staff in the store who need to change inventory, verify identity (the age limit for buying wine in the US) and cook sandwiches in the kitchen.
In September, Bloomberg quoted people familiar with the matter on Wednesday, saying that Amazon is considering opening 3,000 unmanned stores by 2021. The company plans to open about 10 Amazon Go stores by the end of the year and plans to open 50 stores in the Metropolitan Areas such as San Francisco and New York in 2019. However, the focus of Amazon Go is not on the unmanned, but the user's shopping experience brought about by the intelligent checkout of the store. At the same time, self-service systems can help businesses save on labor costs.
