7-Eleven Tests Unoccupied Cashier System in the US Via RFID Cashless

According to foreign media reports, 7-Eleven announced in the United States recently that it will install a self-service cash register device called "Scan & Pay" in 14 stores in Dallas. Customers can use the mobile device to scan the product barcode and then choose to complete the payment via mobile phone, credit card, Apple Pay or GooglePay, without the need for clerk intervention.

However, before using the self-service cash register system in the above stores, consumers need to install the 7-Eleven app. After the payment is completed, the app will provide a QR code, and the consumer will need to scan the QR code to confirm the payment before leaving the store. The app automatically launches payment authentication related functions when the user enters the store. Because of the purchase of alcoholic beverages (requires verification of identity information) and the need for assistance with cooked food, these stores are not completely staffless.

But this is not the first time that 7-Eleven has been involved in the unmanned retail sector. In the United States, Amazon opened its first unmanned retail store, Amazon Go, downstairs in its Seattle headquarters in January. Similarly, there are still staff in the store who need to change inventory, verify identity (the age limit for buying wine in the US) and cook sandwiches in the kitchen.

In September, Bloomberg quoted people familiar with the matter on Wednesday, saying that Amazon is considering opening 3,000 unmanned stores by 2021. The company plans to open about 10 Amazon Go stores by the end of the year and plans to open 50 stores in the Metropolitan Areas such as San Francisco and New York in 2019. However, the focus of Amazon Go is not on the unmanned, but the user's shopping experience brought about by the intelligent checkout of the store.
