Recently, Avery Dennison officially cooperated with the Japanese government to create future convenience stores using RFID technology. It is planned that by 2025, Japan will fully realize unmanned stores.

In addition to RFID smart tags, NFC tags, QR code tags, AR augmented reality tags, etc. are all common smart tags. These technologies enable labels not only to function as packaging, but also to track inventory, prevent loss of goods, detect deterioration of food, identify the authenticity of wine, remind patients to take medicine on time, and become a carrier of coupons and discount promotions. The smart label that combines traditional labels with modern smart technology has undoubtedly brought many new opportunities to the label industry. According to market research firm IDTechEx, the market value of RFID applications in China will reach $4.3 billion by 2025. At present, there are more than 150 companies in China's RFID industry, and its RFID tag manufacturing capacity has reached 85% of the global total capacity. Mobile payment methods with Chinese characteristics such as Alipay and WeChat wallet are accelerating the development of unmanned retail in China.

However, various technologies such as RFID chips, packaging, testing, specialty inks, and variable data involved in smart label production have also brought many new challenges to label manufacturers.
